Winona Ryder is the professionally-known name given to Winona Laura Hoowitz who was who was born within Winona Minnesota. Her parents, Winona Ryder's parents, gave her the name of her hometown. Michel Horowitz was her father as well as Cynthia Palmer, his mother was both an author as well as editors. Ryder's father is from an ethnically Jewish family. Ryder believes she is Jewish. The actress has also a half-sister named Sunyata Jubal. Ryder's younger brother is Uria. Ryder's parents moved her and their children in Mendocino County California when Ryder was seven years old. There was no electricity. Ryder was a consummate read and often spent her time reading books as there was no TV. Ryder was 12 when she took up a place at the American Conservatory Theatre for acting classes in 1983. Ryder landed her first film role on the large screen in 1986 at the age of 15 old. Ryder faced bullying during her teenage years. Ryder hoped her acting career would end this. However, the plan didn't pan out. It didn't stop her from making plans for her future. Beetlejuice which was a 1988 Tim Burton film, was her first big breakthrough. Ryder played parts that proved successful in a variety of films. She was nominated for two Academy Awards one for her part on The Age of Innocence (1993).
